Naming houses: when and where did this start and is this just a Portland thing?

I was reading a personal journal of one of our damnportlanders where they talked about the custom of naming houses. This is something that I have come to take for granted, but I remember about 12 years ago, it was still a cute/novel thing to name your house.

Is this primarily a Portland custom? When and where did it start? Is it one of those things, like bicycling, veganism and polyamory, that started as a flamboyant custom of the younger people, but has since turned into a staid and accepted custom?

Also: do you name your house? Or have you had a named house in the past?
