Has anyone noticed that since the election/inauguration, both George Bush and John McCain have been relatively absent from political speech? Bush has actually gone so far as to say that Obama deserves his silence, and McCain has made a few criticisms of Obama, but they are relatively modest.
I know that in some ways this is a usual enough pattern, since executives like to be statesmen, and vice-presidents are often chosen for the roll of attack dogs
But, still, it seems a little unusual.
Does anyone know if there are any laws regarding delayed paychecks? Google is failing me.
BF started a new job 4 weeks ago. On Monday Aug. 10th he got notice from his recruiter (He is on contract through an agency) that the agency made a clerical error and sent his paycheck to the wrong address. He said it had been sent back to California to fix the address and then he should be getting it shortly. Okay, well it's been 10 days and it's not here. I know mail from here to CA takes 2-3 days so I'm having a hard time understanding what the hell is taking so long.
To make matters worse my car payment is due today and as I am pregnant and unemployed, I have no other money to cover car payment. Guh! At this point I'm hoping it comes in time to pay rent, as the 1st is rapidly approaching.
I think that a "Oh sorry it was late because we messed up" will not suffice. I think that BF is due some sort of compensation (although what I think should be is not always the law).
So, is anyone aware of any laws, or protection or something my BF can use to get his paycheck and make sure this doesn't happen again?
Is it illegal in Oregon to carry prescription drugs in a container that is not labeled?
I put my meds and some aspirin in a plastic film canister-someone told me I could get arrested for this.
edit to add: I know this concept is stupid. Just wanted to see if anyone knew the actual law. I searched, but found nothing.
Quick: Where do I get a great Rhubarb or Starberry Rhubarb pie? Downtown/Ross Island area is best.
EDIT: We're gunna get one from Whole Foods. Thanks for the suggestions!
Are any theaters in downtown (or nearby) having a midnight screening of Inglorious Basterds? If so, please let me know which one(s)
Whole Foods' CEO opposes health care reform.
Boycotting them is easy for me since I never shopped there anyway and their prices are too expensive. But it's not really a boycott when you never patronized them before.
Hey, I get frustrated when I hear about what the insurance companies are doing to stop health care reform and think about how little choice their customers have to vote with their dollars.
I have a fireplace, and although I feel like I'm IN one currently, I'm planning for when it's cold out. Where do you get firewood and at what price locally?
ETA: Local can be Portland/Vancouver
I'm looking to get a Brazilian.
I would *like* to avoid Wax On and Bare.
I would like to go somewhere on the East side. Preferably.
After a stressful couple of weeks, I've decided to treat myself to a massage. I've never had one before, so I'm looking for a place with super friendly people that's somewhere in the South East near a bus line and open on Saturdays. (Added bonus if it's on Hawthorne or Belmont!)
Also, and this is probably a dumb question, is there anything special you need to do to prepare for a massage?
Thanks for any suggestion.
Hi. I'm looking for a writing/critique group. I'd like to join an established one, but if that doesn't work I'll start my own.
I've posted on craigstlist, the Willamette Writers forum, and the Portland Writer's yahoogroup, so I thought I'd spam this place, too.
So, what I'm looking for: A group of serious, skilled writers to get together once a month (at least) to do some critiquing of our work. This wouldn't be a group to just read your stuff and say "oh, good job." I want to dissect what works and what doesn't so we can all get better. Not just SPaG but plot and flow and characters.
I've been a writer for about 5 years now, taken classes, tried my hands on weird storytelling methods, done NaNoWriMo five times. I mainly write science fiction/fantasy with a romantic bent to it. I'm currently working on editing my Egyptian Fairytale novel from last NaNo. I plan on getting it published someday (how is that for optimism?)
I'm a 'write almost every day' kinda person because that works for me. I get up two hours before work to do it, too.
If you have a group or want to start one with me, email me. Please, only those seriously interested. I would prefer to meet in Vancouver, but can travel if I have to.

So, I'm attempting to put together some neat found material sketchbooks for some artist friends of mine, but for the life of me I cannot find any stores in the Portland area that sell waxed linen thread. I've tried craft places like Michael's and Craft Warehouse and fabric stores like Joann's without success. Heck, I've even tried a few marine supply stores, but they didn't stock any.
Call me old-fashioned, but I'd much rather buy from a brick and mortar store instead of ordering off the internet, so I'm curious if anyone knows of any stores around town where one might purchase waxed linen thread?
Thanks a ton, DPers!
Anyone know of any free organized kickball games in the Portland area?
...whether it's parked legally or not.
I parked my car in a surface parking lot at SW 10th and Main this morning and paid for parking until 7 am the next morning. I worked, then went to the Beavers game tonight, and returned at 9:30 PM.
When I came back, my car was gone, and my friend thought he saw someone towing my car. I sprinted towards the tow truck and Retriever Towing was towing my car.
They said that they were "just moving it" because the lot was reserved for the Leverage production. Funny - they never posted the lot in the morning.
Excuse me....but this is MY car, and you did not give me any notice that the lot was not mine to use until 7 am the next morning.
This is the same company that towed a car parked by a domestic violence victim who pulled into a parking lot to make an emergency call.
UPDATE: 1:40 PM Friday - the president City Center Parking (Greg Goodman) just called me, said it shouldn't have happened, apologized, and offered me several days of free parking. I'm mollified now, although someone should do something about Retriever. Someone like Randy Leonard.
What's your ringtone, if you have a cell phone?
What do you want it to be? Do you hate or love it?
(Mine is a section from Frontier Psychiatrist by the Avalanches, specifically the violin part. I should have something more true to me, like the theme from Mortal Kombat, but this works for now. Also I can get super excited when people recognize it.)
