Help me get started!

I'm a little nervous to post this here, but after reading the community user info, and reading about apartments for rent and the like, I thought I might not get too flamed for it! :D

I'm an Esthetician who has just moved into a space over at Hair Oui Are in NE Portland at 11122 NE Halsey ST and am ready to get some new clients in. I do facials, body waxing and professional make up.

Here is the Deal, if you book a facial (or purchase a gift certificate) by February 14th 2009, and state (either in a reply here, or an email, or phone) that you are from damnportlanders you will get 10% off your first facial! My phone number is 503-708-7298 and my email is Chryssm@Gmail.com

I need clients, and damnportlanders is one of my favorite groups of people... can one mix business with pleasure? Let's find out!

Portland compaired to...everywhere else in America

I've never really lived outside of Portland, let alone the Northwest, but I'm curious to hear from other people who have lived elsewhere in the United States.

After a recent trip out of country, it was interesting to 'amaze' those around me on my trip that I was not Pro-Bush and never had been nor was I pro-war. Dubbed a Canadian in disguise.

The view of an average American seemed to be they were: loud, fat, stupid and rude to other cultures, drives a gas-guzzlin' car, loves Jesus, proudly 'Merican, gun-totin' flag-wavin' ye'hawin' person.

I mean, I knew that that's what they think of us, but it was different really hearing it.

Plus, living in the Northwest, it seems like a lot of Portlanders tote their differences to 'typical' America. We are, stereotypically 'liberal, okay with gay people (or are even gay ourselves), recycle, ride mass transit, are 'green', organic-lovin' bikers that do yoga and enjoy yerba mate/coffee like it's goin' out of style'.

Is Portland, the Northwest, really all that different from the rest of America? How is it different in attitudes/culture than the places any of you have lived before?

edit: mind you, those stereotypes are just examples of typical stereotypes, not necessarily what I personally think of America/our city :P

well, it happened

Those four remaining Bolsheviks already fucked up. Turns out that some things in the data center "don't react well to bullets."

I don't know if you noticed, but LJ's down. Been dead as jolly old Nicholas II since last Tuesday. And if I know my Russian (I minored in Cyrillic opera gestures back in '91), it's going to be months before they get past the Somali pirates, disarm the missile defense and identify an appropriate capitalist scapegoat. And that doesn't even count the time it'll take explaining the difference between "virgin" and "virgin-like" to Nadya's Orthodox mother (Nadya's the one cute one in boots).

The challenges remain daunting.

So, it may not be back up for six months or more. And by then, it'll probably just be another Russian pirate music & porn site. Sortof like a giant version of sexy_photo. God damn I loved me my daily dose from Russian pervs.

All this, right now? Hallucination from withdrawals. Sorry to be the bearer.

Rainy Driving Help

Growing up in Ohio and Colorado I learned how to drive on snow and ice. No problem there at all. But the rain this is new to me.

Today I was headed up I-5 to Olympia. I got north of Kelso and the skies just started dumping rain. I mean hard. Every time a semi would go by it felt like my car was hit by a tsunami. My windshield wipers couldn't keep up with the amount of water so I decided to get off at the next exit to turn around and come home. As I was driving to the next exit I hit a huge ass puddle (I didn't even see it), and proceeded to hydroplane off the highway. My car finally came to a stop about a foot from a ditch. I have never been so scared in my life. I crept back on to the road, got to the next exit, and headed back. I was terrified driving back home. I have never been scared of driving in any weather condition but I thought I was going to die.

I know you are all so relieved I didn't die so here is my question - How do you drive safely in a torrential downpour? How can people drive 70 mph when they can't see anything? Is it safer to keep driving or pull over to the side of the road and drive to wait it out?

I am sure I will be made fun of for this post but I need help!

Nail places in SE-ish?

My boy has expressed interest in me getting my nails done, and not just done, but DID. Meaning, not just the run of the mill white tip nails. Something more along the lines of colored tips and maybe a pretty design thrown in there too. We're having a special night and we both want to look good.

I'm in SE, willing to travel pretty much anywhere in Portland. Would prefer some examples of the work done at said places because I don't want to walk in there, get something done, and be disappointed with it. If they have a website, awesome!

Recommendations? Places I should stay away from? Bueller?

free drugs?

You know how sometimes doctors give you free samples of meds that the pharma companies give them? Is there any way to find those free samples without going to the doctor? I don't have health insurance and I want to just have a small supply of something on hand. I'm specifically looking for Valtrex, because when I have a cold sore I usually want it to go away fast. Don't make fun, you probably have oral herpes too.

And yes, I could get some Abreva, but it costs its weight in gold and I'm a cheapskate right now.

Touching me, touching you.

Holy shit, I have four free tickets to see Neil Diamond at the Rose Garden tomorrow night. Why are they free? OK, backstory:

My boss bought these last summer and chose the print-out method of receiving tickets instead of getting the hard copies. The concert WAS scheduled for Monday, Sept. 22 but ol' Neil canceled due to a bout with the laryngitis (or something) and was rescheduled for TOMORROW, January 8th. I called the Rose Garden box office and was told that these tickets will still be honored at the door. However...

Neil's September engagement featured an "in-the-round" stage design, and these tickets (Sec. 110, Row J, seats 18,19,20,21 respectively) were "primo" for that kind of stage schematic (right up front). Well, it has recently come to our attention that Neil's make-up show tomorrow features a more traditional stage setup, which looks like this:

Did you see where Sec. 110 is? Yeah, I know. Not quite so primo anymore, but good seats nonetheless!

Why didn't my boss get a refund when we found out the show was postponed? Because the Rose Quarter people said that these tickets would be honored at the door. However, we didn't anticipate the changed stage setup, and by the time we found out about it the 30 days had passed in order to get a refund/seat-change. So, my boss bought four MORE seats in the third row on the floor (he's a generous fella) and told me to "get rid of" these tickets we got stuck with. They look like this:

Well, it turns out people couldn't care less about buying computer-printed tickets on eBay or Craigslist, even at massively discounted rates (remember, theses tix originally sold for $120.00 each!). And now...my point:

Who wants four FREE tickets to see Neil Diamond tomorrow night? Please respond with a "Why Neil Diamond Matters To Me" essay. The one I deem most creative/entertaining wins the tickets and I shall make arrangements tomorrow for pick-up.

Sorry for such a long-winded and verbose post, dear DamnPortlanders, but THESE ARE FOUR FREE NEIL DIAMOND TICKETS!

Presidential Lunch

Obama attends historic presidential lunch
Meets with Bush and 3 former U.S. presidents at White House

Hailing it as an "extraordinary gathering," Barack Obama met with President George W. Bush and all the living former U.S. presidents for a historic meeting at the White House on Wednesday.

"I just want to thank the president for hosting us," the president-elect said as he stood in the Oval Office beside Bush, his father, George Bush Sr., and former presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter.

"All the gentlemen here understand both the pressures and possibilities of this office," Obama told reporters. "For me to have the opportunity to get advice, good counsel and fellowship with these individuals is extraordinary, and I'm very grateful to all of them."

Just curious...

If any of you have any personal experience with the Balance & Hearing Center NW (specifically Dr. F. Owen Black)? I was diagnosed with an inner ear infection on xmas, and the dizziness, vertigo and balance issues haven't gotten better, so it's off to the specialist I go - just wondering if anyone here has had any dealings with this office? Good, bad or indifferent?

Thank you, O Mighty DP!

The National Debt and Obama's Megastimulus Plan

As everyone probably knows, part of the financial crisis is that the combination of declining tax revenues and paying for so many bailouts has made the US budget deficit for the next year over one trillion dollars...which dwarfs even the half a trillion dollar record that Bush set back in 2004.

And then Obama is planning on spending a lot of money on top of that.

It would be a bit hypocritical of me, as an Obama supporter, to let this slide for him when fiscal responsibility was one of things I railed against Bush for. Of course, I realize that Obama has a well-thought out plan, and many economists support this type of stimulus. On the other hand, if this doesn't stimulate the economy, in about two years we will all be in a big problem...with an economic recession and about two trillion dollars more in debt.

Not a cheery thought.

...little brother?

...speaking of little video-cameras,
I'm wondering if anyone has one of those nanny-cam teddy bears (or something that would work like that, it's to try to video an animal so it's not really important that it be all stealth or anything) that I could borrow or rent for like a week?  Barring that, anyone know where you could buy one and how much they go for?
