Don't pay too much.

Considering many stations are still charging close to $3/gallon, it might be worth it to some of you to head to Costco to fill up next time. Gas is down to $2.34 at the one in Hillsboro and similarly priced at other Costco stations. We actually filled up for less than $20 bucks the other day!

Have a great Monday.

I am going to be hosting a fondue dinner party and I'm hoping y'all can help me out.

Where can I get pots? I tried CL, but not much luck. I'll get them cheap and new if I have to, but would rather cheap and used.
How many pots do I need for 10 or so folks?
Please & Thanks!

Gah. dstroy, I felt over Sunday like I might be getting a cow-orker's cold again, so this morning I tried your grandma's cure, minus the vodka shot since I was on my way in to work.

Oh my god that's the most vile thing I've ever had in my mouth. But if I feel better tomorrow, I'll do it again next time I'm sick.

Bishops Rec?

I'm unhappy with my current hairdresser and need a cut this week. I'm tempted to go to the Bishops on NE 28th because it's close to my house.
Has anyone gone there? A particular stylist I should (or shouldn't) ask for?
Thanks!

Anyone else seriously stoked about the Sam Phillips show tomorrow night? I've been following her off and on for over 20 years (yes, I even heard her stuff in the 80s - we don't like to talk about it) but this is the first time I've had the opportunity to see her live.

Meetup reminder!

Hey guys-- Halloween meetup is TOMORROW! At the East Bank Saloon starting at 7pm!

Bonus points to anyone who shows up in costume ♥ And those who arrive early may get some of my leftover pumpkin cream cheese brownies (available while supplies last)!

I do want to note, though, that tomorrow is ALSO the beginning of the Blazers season, apparently. As such we've been tucked back away into the Buffalo room and I am not optimistic about our odds of being able to take over the back room of the restaurant (and the woman I talked to at the place was, shall we say, NOT very thrilled with the idea of reserving the tables in the main room).

So consider yourselves forewarned; I figure we can handle it for one month. I guess it would seem kinda unfair for us to take up half of a sports pub and then ignore the TV as we usually do.

So, yeah. Costumes! Buffalo room! Be there!

Handheld sewing machine?

I'm looking for a hand held sewing machine but I have yet to find one. So far I've checked Sears and Michael's Craft Store. Any other ideas where I might find one of these handy dandy devices?

I'd like a handheld vs a full size because I don't want to spend a lot of money.

Gracias!

What: Portland Premiere of Gus van Sant's MILK
When: Nov 14th 8:30 pm
Where: Portland, at the Schnitz
See http://www.pcpa.com/events/event.php?run=1516 for more details and tickets.

It's going to be an amazing night! Break out the retro glam and rainbow threads! Gus will introduce the film, and members of the cast and crew will be there to celebrate with us.

Gus Van Sant is continuing his long-term commitment to homeless youth by hosting a Red Carpet Debut of his latest film MILK as a benefit for Outside In. MILK stars Sean Penn as Harvey Milk, gay activist and politician who helped blaze the trail we are on now.

"Just as Harvey Milk's bravery and sense of hope changed history, Outside In has encouraged and empowered a population that is sometimes overlooked and underestimated."

-Gus Van Sant

Outside In provides safety off the streets, meals and skilled counselors. An on-site transitional housing program delivers one of the most successful outcomes in the nation. Access to medical and mental health services, a nationally recognized job training center, a thriving education program and alternative school have helped thousands of homeless youth leave the streets.

Strange car, strange noise

I was just given an Oldsmobile Silhouette van as a loaner while my car is being repaired.  I drove it home with no mishap, but when I went back out to run an errand, as soon as I put it in gear, an on-off constant buzzing noise coming from somewhere in the back started.  Buzz.  Buzz.  Buzz.  When I put it in park, it stops.  I've checked all the doors, I've checked the emergency brake, no warning lights are on and I can't find anything about it in the owner's manual.  I called the place who gave it to me and they said they just got it and had no idea why it was doing that.  (Helpful, right?)  The only thing that I notice that's strange is the temperature display goes back and forth between the outside temp and the word ICE, staying for several seconds on each.

Does anyone know why it's doing this?  I don't really need to drive it very far over the next couple days, but it's annoying as hell.

This is probably a long shot...
Does anyone in the hillsboro/beaverton area have some plain black and white converse high tops size 4 or 4 1/2(6 or 6 1/2 in womens) I could borrow on Friday? I am a bridesmaid at my best friend's wedding and she requires I wear those shoes, and I would prefer not to buy a new pair if I can help it.
I would return them to you either on Saturday after work or Sunday after work.

good call

Dear drunk (almost) biker,

We saw you for the first time as you staggered down the sidewalk holding hands with the neighbors' homeless friend "Lawn Boy" around noon on this lovely Monday, looking mighty intoxicated. We didn't think much about it and figured you had come from the Cuckoo's Nest for a visit with the neighbors. About two hours later we looked up as you rolled LB's crappy bike down the hill into the road and attempted to mount your rusty steed. It was like a slow motion scene in a movie- you wobbled, found your footing, tried to swing your leg over the seat and succeeded on the second attempt, only to lose your balance and fall awkwardly over onto the pavement in a tangled mess of legs and metal. Your recovery was slow, as if stunned. The neighbor across the street pulled away in her Mercedes as you fumbled with the bike, trying to detangle your legs. I hear that alcohol really slows your reaction time, so that must have played a part- I'd say it took a good 30 seconds for you to get yourself upright. You then proceeded to stagger off to the opposite side of the street, throw down the bike and collapse on the curb. We were relieved to see you sit down and ponder the situation rather than try your hand at biking again. So in the long run we applaud your decision to abandon the bike there on the curb across from our house, and slowly gimp away down the street on your mission, wherever it may have taken you.

ps: Four hours later, the bike is still laying on the curb. What nice caring friends you have found in our neighbors.

UPDATE: This morning while I fed our cats outside, Lawn Boy came around the corner with another friend, probably also picked up at the bar. I decided to tell him that the bike his lady friend had attempted to ride off on was still across the street. It took him a while to process what I was saying, as he clearly didn't recall the woman I had described. Awesome. So he parked his can of something underneath our tree and went to roll the bike up into the neighbors' back yard. In the mean time, LB's new friend and I discussed how the neighborhood seagulls are as big as crows and how much we love cats. Once the bike had been properly stowed next to the crappy trailer in the back yard, LB and his friend took off for the bar. Seriously he said "we're gonna go get drunk". At 8:00 am. FTW

Cashing Canadian Checks

I know check cashing has already been covered this month, but I also have mitigating circumstances: I need to find a place that will cash a Canadian check--or just exchange it for a check in U.S. dollars--and the check is for more than $500 U.S.

My credit union will not handle any foreign currency, checks or otherwise, and the institution in question is extremely reluctant to wire the money.

Referral Money

Hey DP,

Normally I wouldn't post something like this, but I figured I might actually be able to help some people out with this.

Here's the deal. My boyfriend is working at Hillsboro Hyundai, and apparently they have a referral program there. What this means, is that if you happen to know anyone who wants to buy a car (used or new, it doesn't matter) tell them to check out the Hyundai dealership in Hillsboro, and they "buy" a car, you can get $200 or so, for referring them. Have them ask for Anthony Parisi, and he'll make sure it happens :) I figure if there is anyone out there who would fit the bill, this would be able to help people make a little extra during the recession we're in.

If you have any questions about how this works, feel free to ask, and I'll get back to you. Lets help each other!

Tax Bullshit

So...I'm somewhat confused at the moment. Here we are October 27, 2008 and I just receive a bill from the Oregon Department of Revenue. Apparently I owe them around $425 in taxes.

What the eff. Seriously. Not only am I taxed in the highest tax bracket (single) but I only made approx sixteen grand last year.

To top it off I owe the feds like $350.

How in the fuck do I owe almost $800 in taxes?  This doesn't make any sense whatsoever. The year before when I filed I kept everything the same and I ended up getting like $200 bucks back.

Does anyone know why this is?

More politics

I don't think this has been posted already, but feel free to snark/correct me if needed.
It might be a little TLDR for some, but I found it pretty interesting.

"This is the story of the real John McCain, the one who has been hiding in plain sight. It is the story of a man who has consistently put his own advancement above all else, a man willing to say and do anything to achieve his ultimate ambition: to become commander in chief, ascending to the one position that would finally enable him to outrank his four-star father and grandfather........"

Gift Wrap

It's me again! Remember me? I didn't think you had heard enough of me recently, and this brand new question was unrelated to my last.

I'm looking for wrapping paper. I think it would be awesome to wrap all of my Christmas gifts in Portland wrapping paper. Or Oregon wrapping paper. A Google search yielded nothing exciting. A little help?
