1. I'm starting a new position as a nanny. I've gone through this independently and not used an agency, and I don't have prior nannying experience. The parents would like a criminal background search done. Which hey, I'm fine with but I'm just not sure how to go about it.
Google searches yield an amazing amount of companies that do this. So, does anyone have any company that they've used before? Any companies to avoid? I don't know if it will make a difference, but just want to point out that I'm from out of state.
*EDIT* I know I shouldn't have to arrange it, but I'm trying to start off on the right foot, as this is on a trial basis. So assuming I had no choice, what would you suggest?
2. Help me settle an argument: My friend claims that the actual urinal is also called a "stall". I say that the entire area encompassing the individual urinal is a "stall". Looking it up in a dictionary proves I am right. But he still insists that people call the actual porcelin thing a "stall". He's male. I'm female. Maybe he's right, but I kind of think not. Anyone?
i am looking for a beginngers banjo. what would be some good places around portland to check out?
I call for the great knowledge of the DP!
If the landlord doesn't ask for a documented walkthrough and one never happens, how do they hold you accountable for damages?
I'm driving out to Sauvie Island for the first time today. Anything I should see or do in particular, or should I just drive/walk around and see what I find? I know that someone posted recently about Sauvie, but it's about 127308213 posts back by now, and I can't find it.
I know there's been vet-related posts on here lately but please don't be snarky bastards.
I need a vet recommendation asap. The love of my life (my cat) is sick. I am brokebroke (thanks, americorps) and can't really afford to go the vet. However, I'm going to keep an eye on him. He just might need a vet :(
Could anyone out there recommend a vet that is awesome and would be sensitive to the fact that I have NO money and that I would not be there if I didn't absolutely have to? And would be sensitive if anything happens to my 13-year old baby I've had since he was a kitten and I fall apart?
Pleeeaase help me
While unpacking my DVD collection (I've got quite a few) I decided I should try and get rid of some DVDs that I never really watch. They're all in good shape, and have only been watched a few times each. Let me know if you're interested!
DVDs for $5:
Sleepers (Snap Case - 1996 - Brad Pitt, Kevin Bacon, Robert DeNiro)
Exorcist: The Beginning (Clamshell Case - 2004 - Stellan Skarsgård)
The Gods Must Be Crazy II (Clamshell Case - 1989)
DVDs for $10:
Family Guy Seasons 1&2
Friends Season 1
Sleepaway Camp Survival Kit
(boxset includes Sleepaway Camp II & III, bonus footage and "diary" but does not include Sleepaway Camp I)
DVDs for $25:
Marx Brothers Silver Screen Collection
(boxset includes The Cocoanuts, Animal Crackers, Monkey Business, Horse Feathers, Duck Soup and booklet)
For those of you interested (and you know who you are) the singalong version of Mamma Mia will be shown tomorrow, August 29th at the Lloyd Cinema 8 in Portland, Cascade Stadium 16 in Vancouver, and Bridgeport Village Stadium 18 in Tigard.
Now... go forth and be cheesy!!! :)
Therefore, DP, what do you think is the best place for me to sell my Playstation 2, its games, some movies on DVD, and perhaps some CDs?
Is there an independent place that rocks, or am I just better off going to some place like Gamestop(I think they buy used hardware, right?)?
Thank you for your time.
Does anyone want to buy $94 in Gamestop credit?
Nevermind. My friend bought it from me. Thanks!

My roommate is super sad her boyfriend forgot to get Bon Iver tix for the show Saturday at Alladin and it sold out on them.
Curious as to whether or not anyone has tix and can't make it or knows someone with that scenario.

I am looking for hopefully inexpensive Yoga or fun aerobics in SW by Tigard, Multnomah Village, Garden Home
I keep seeing on the east side $5 classes and I am totally jealous but I can't drive that far
Woah, I see advertisements on livejournal now! Have I never noticed them, or is it new? I was wondering how their business model made $$ without ads.
(<-------if you cant see it, log out of LJ...)
Does anyone know of any Obama DNC speech viewing parties this evening? I would like to watch the speech, but I also have the day off work tomorrow and wouldn't mind being social and getting out of my apartment for a while. Also, its sort of lame to play the democratic national convention drinking game i made up alone =/
I feel like I'm 15 years too old to be asking this question, but I'm looking for a registered dietician in the area -- specifically, one who runs their own consulting service. I am considering pursuing my RD part-time, with the eventual intent to work part-time as a consultant (under my own business, probably), but I'm not totally sure I want to make the committment. I would love to be able to talk to someone about their job, specifically, info on the RD program (let's face it, colleges are biased sources when discussing degree programs). I'm also interested to know how difficult/viable it is to start your own business in the Portland area in this field. (I might ask uncomforatble questions about salary scales, too. Just sayin'.)
Really, I'm still trying to decide if I want to do this, and also, if it's even viable to do without suddenly quitting my job ('cause I like my job for now). Ideally, this would be a part-time gig until/unless I decide to stop teaching. I'd love to have a conversation or two with someone who has done/is doing this. Is that you? Can I meet you for a cup of coffee and the 20 questions game?
Uh... Portland related 'cause it involves jobs and people are always looking for work on here.
so i wanna make a mix cd for my ex bf's birthday on monday. but we have agreed to not physically see each other again (my decision- long, drawn-out, messy situation) so i would have to email it. i suppose i could just burn one and snail mail it, but i really don't feel like it, i am not sure i trust his roommate (part of the messy situation!), plus monday is a mail holiday, so i really wanna go the email route. thing is, i have no clue how you do that. can you make one big file on itunes? or a zip file or something? he has gmail so big attachments are cool. how do you make a zip file, anyway (i have a pc)? also, are there any birthday or whatever e-cards you can send with attachments like this?
Please, I'm desperate.
I'm just asking if anyone has recently seen a "hiring" sign at local businesses, or know of anyone who is hiring, or if you are an employer, please email me at lindsey dot kanno at gmail.
I've got work experience, but mainly in politics and sales, and most of those jobs aren't the hours I need. Help!
What I'm thankful for this week:
1. That my wonderful boyfriend and I have good, stable jobs that gave us bonuses this month (and a four day weekend this weekend, w00t!), that my kitties are happy and healthy, and we have a nice, safe home to live in.
2. That I've lived in Portland for two years after five years of dreaming of being here, and that I'm FINALLY able to go back to school (10 years after I started).
3. That I'm alive in such an interesting political time, that I was able to witness an African-American man accept the nomination for the Democratic party in one of the most moving speeches I've seen a politician make. It's even more moving watching the reaction people have to him.
4. That it will be fall soon!
So Portland, what are you thankful for?
Why is it OK for the oregonian to throw a plastic bag full of shit I dont read, which I march straight to garbage bin in the morning, on my lawn once a week?
Am I allowed to drive around and throw useless literature and ads wrapped in plastic in everyones yards too?
