What inevitably makes you smile? Like when you've had a bad day.

When my mother was still around she would always sing this song to me. Its definitely one of my happy songs. only, she sang the Doris Day version of course.

Que sera sera

While babysitting when I was young, I'd cheer up the kids by singing "Don't Worry, be happy." Its crazy how well it worked and I'm no singer. *tee hee*

Things like: Steve Buscemi & his short-bread man commercials, fizzgig, the two men in the balcony, maps, lemmings, and out of place humor like the cat wearing a scuba mask underwater in "We Love Katamari"... and ANY THING that helps me sleep!

oooh, the list goes on... what things always make your day when you see/do/ or hear them?
oh yes... and hoping you're all having a very stressless HUMP day! <3

Light fixture for sale

I have this light fixture that used to be in our dining room. As you can see from the icon, I have twins. I turned our dining room into a play room and replaced the light fixture with something more suitable for the new purpose. The light fixture is in perfect condition, not a darned thing wrong with it. And it is even a good looking fixture. Our house was built in 2000 so it isn't any older than that.

I don't have a lot of time on my hands (twins, remember) and want to make sure the fixture gets a good home. I put it on craigslist but am not getting any hits. I don't know if it is because I forgot to take a picture of it hanging before we replaced it, and the photos I have are goofy looking...or maybe craigslist isn't where people go for light fixtures? Or maybe no one wants it?

Anyhow, if anyone here wants the light fixture, I am selling it. And for what price? Make me an offer. No reasonable offer refused. Collapse )

*update*

I know you all care desperately about my car situation so I'd thought I'd update you. Dude called me and I told him that I thought his estimate was way over priced and he told me he chose that shop because he's had a good experience with them in the past. I told him that I would get a few estimates of my own and get in touch with him about it on Friday. I've decided that I will take the middle estimate, offer him that amount and if he wants more then I will tell him to take me to small claims court because I'm not paying for his crack habit.

A few people have suggested that I save myself the trouble and go through my insurance. I thought about it but then I decided, fuck this guy. I was nice enough to leave a note and offer to pay for the damage, I'll be damned if I let him push me around or let me end up paying out the ass my on auto insurance for the next few years.

I present to you $1803 of damage!

The interstate in your life

Isaiah 35:8
"And a highway shall be there, and it shall be called the Holy Way; the unclean shall not pass over it, and fools shall not err therein."

Fundamentalist Christians such as those in Pat Robertson's 700 Club say this refers to I-35, the interstate highway that runs through the midwest, from Mexico to Canada:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5S38LpMgu0

So, I looked up Isaiah 5 to see what god had to say about our highway, I-5.

1 Let me sing for my beloved a love song concerning his vineyard: My beloved had a vineyard on a very fertile hill.
2 He digged it and cleared it of stones, and planted it with choice vines; he built a watchtower in the midst of it, and hewed out a wine vat in it;

OK, so. God recognizes Oregon's fine wine industry. Do you think he's a Pinot Noir drinker? If you're Catholic, be sure your Blood of Jesus Christ is Made in Oregon for prophesied holiness.

8 Woe to those who join house to house, who add field to field, until there is no more room, and you are made to dwell alone in the midst of the land.
9 The LORD of hosts has sworn in my hearing: "Surely many houses shall be desolate, large and beautiful houses, without inhabitant.

The LORD also hates Measure 37. He's an advocate of sustainable land-use practices and opposes rampant development and overcrowding.

There is is then. When you support sustainable land-use practices to preserve Oregon's vinters, you're doing the work of the LORD.

Cocktail drinks

Portland related because we all love to drink and I have to bring in a cocktail recipe to a social networking event in Portland! What is a cocktail that you love, that LOOKS fancy, but is not complicated to make and does not require many ingredients? And.... GO!

I'm having some serious life/financial problems and I'm going to be without an apartment in a week. I've got no family, and a pretty limited friends network so I'll be couch sitting for awhile. I thought I'd ask here before I turned to Craigslist to see if anyone wanted to adopt my 8 month old cat, Gatsby. He's my baby, and this is pretty hard for me, but it's not probable for me to have him at this point. There are details and pictures behind the cut.

needs a good home

So I am looking for a new home for my baby darling doggie, Adelaid. I'm starting school full time in addition to working full time, and though it breaks my heart, I have to.

Some info on my darling:
*8 years old, female whippet mix, around 40 lbs
*Fixed. Well trained (sit, stay, lay down, go poddy)
*Plays fetch with a tennis ball
*VERY affectionate
*Good with other dogs, and with friendly cats (she is actually afraid of cats, but if they are friendly so is she)
*Loves playing with her tail

Basically she is the perfect dog. I want to make sure she goes to a really good home, so if you are interested let me know and maybe we can meet up for coffee or something (my treat).

Nueless Clewbie - Phone Edition

What do y'all know about buying a phone elsewhere and activating it on the Verizon network? I don't want to pay their crazy prices, but I also don't want to get stuck buying something that I won't be able to activate or use. I'm totally clueless on this topic, as I've never done it before and do not want to fuck it up!

Any advice, experience, websites to point me toward, etc. will be greatly appreciated, as always.

Cross-posted to National Geographic Magazine and yer mom.

Portland related because I AM PORTLAND.

ETA: Found a replacement phone through the magic of the LiveJournals, but am leaving this up for future reference purposes. And, human_beans rocks.

detailing, massage, dinner

Hi. I'm looking for a few recommendations.

1. I need to get the interior of my car cleaned. My car is generally clean and it's an '05 but there is dog hair everywhere. I'd like to get my car detailed and I don't want to spend an arm and a leg, otherwise I will do it myself. I am looking for a reputable auto detailing place near the Hillsboro/Beaverton area.

2. My birthday is next month and I want to get a massage. I'd like to spend less than $100. I am looking for the perfect massage. I prefer a female masseuse. Does anyone have any personal recommendations?

3. A restaurant in Portland worthy of a gift certificate? I plan on giving my brother-in-law and his wife a date night for Christmas: dinner, a movie, and free babysitting. I plan on doing a $50 gift certificate.

Thank you guys! Everyone have a happy holiday season!

weight bench

I am not experienced in buying fitness equipment, so I am wondering how to go about buying some free weights and a small bench for Christmukah/Hanumas for my boyfriend. I don't want to buy them off Craigslist because I know the experience will drive me insane. I am in inner SE portland, but I am willing to drive anywhere in the city. Anyone know where I can find this?

Thanks!

Scam-o-rama

I recently received a check in the mail for $3,499. Sadly, it was not my kicker check but in fact a check that is part of a very obvious (to me) scam. The letter with the check says I've been selected for a "Mystery Shopper" program and I should use this check to cover my expenses. Of course after cashing the check I need to hook up with Western Union or Moneygram and send back 2,900 dollars. Riiiiiiight.

I'd like to report this scam BUT I'm not sure who/where to report it to. I did Google around for a while and was led to the BBB and the Attorney General, yet my specific issue doesn't look like something the BBB will address and the office of the Attorney General only seems to give a rip if I've already lost money to the scam.

So I ask you- who the hell do I report this to? Should I just shred it and forget about it? I'd like to do something because although I caught on to the scam it's actually somewhat well done and I could see people being fooled by it. I'd also like to see the assholes responsible for the scam get in trouble, if I could help it. Can I do anything at all?

We made it!

First off, sorry jupiterjuniper! Did not see your reply to my post till after we arrived in Seattle.
As for the rest of you, sitting at home and biting your nails wondering if my girl and I made it: WE DID! It took 6 hours driving 5-10 mph over the speed limit, but we made it. We took I-84 to just past the Dalles, crossing over to 97 and going up to Ellensburg. From there across I 90 to Seattle.
Gotta leave the hotel now, Tori is waiting!

Well, I was all for the war in Iraq until I read this little gem...

Hurricane Katrina and the costs of fighting the wars in the Middle East have stalled a plan to prevent flooding in Chehalis, Centralia and a portion of Interstate 5 closed by high water this week.

I don't think I've ever read such an interesting lead to a new story (or so...loaded of one) in awhile!

Wish me luck on my trek to Seattle. Deck the Hall better be SO worth it.

Help!

My grandma in Vancouver, BC is super sick and me being the poor college student that I am, I was planning to drive up to visit her this weekend. But now that I-5 is closed for who knows how long, leaving me stuck in Portland, I was wondering if anyone knows the (other) cheaper way -- whether someone had extra air miles to sell, or a ride to BC this girl could hitch, or basically whatever! If you could hookup/help this girl out, it would be super appreciated. :)

Any help would mean so much to me. The sooner, the better. Please let me know!

xoxo.

Anybody else having problems lately with Safeway's 2% in plastic jugs going bad really fast? The last two gallons I've bought have developed a weird odor within a day of opening them. I think I'm gonna take one back and bitch at them tomorrow.

Help!

I should be doing homework now that is due tomorrow, but instead I am trying desperately to find out who opened for Tori Amos last night at the Schnitz because although I was there, I didn't see the opening act. I usually love her openers and that's how I discovered Jude, Rufus Wainwright and Imogen Heap. Curiously I did not like Howie Day.

I need to know! Thanks.
