Inform Yourself

For those of you that do not listen to the show, last week's episode of This American Life showed a side of this so called 'war' and our sweet country's particular part in it that you will not see on Fox News.
The episode is half way down on the front page and it titled "Habeas Schmabeas 2007"
I strongly suggest everyone should listen and be more informed about the reality of our presence in the world.
Willful ignorance is the greatest travesty a person can inflict on themselves.

Oregon or Washington?

I found this community because I live in San Jose, CA,  and it's just waaaay too expensive here to really eke out a living.  Rent for a one-bedroom is (and this is lower-end) $1,200 a month.  We're both 28.  We're considering mostly Portland, Oregon, but maybe Washington in the Seattle area.

My wife works in advertising, and I'm in social services, and we know there's both in Portland, and that rent isn't too crazy vs. how much you make, right?

At any rate, we think it may be a good thing for us.  We're looking to make "LJ Buddies" with people from this community, especialy those who could help us figure things out about the area.  My wife is concerned about the amount of overcast days, and Seasonal Affective Disorder.

So, tell us what you think, give us suggestions, etc.

Thanks.

By the way, my wife is toolgrl150

SOLID PORTLAND PEDIATRICIAN??

Please recommend a new pediatrician for my toddler.

I am fed up with Metropolitan Pediatrics, where we are shuffled in and out of the office like livestock.

I want a doctor who will at least pretend to care and one who will not act as if she is trying to beat the clock when she enters the room to see us.

Thanks in advance. (We live in Southeast, by the way, and Gresham doctors will be considered too.)

REALLY good Chinese food

can anyone suggest a really good and authentic Chinese restaurant?
i'm a huge fan of walnut shrimp, sauteed string beans, sweet & sour...and every place i have been the food is bland, lacks spice and umpfh. every local magazine/newspaper raves about Wong's...but i was not impressed. i've checked out Yelp.com too, but not much there.

HELP, i am craving some yummy spicy kung pao!

A couple things

1) I have, because of the nature of my work, VHS screeners of
every
single
episode
of Tony Orlando and Dawn's 1970's TV show on VHS there are 51 VHS tapes filled with wacky skits, silly songs and biting social commentary all covered with sequins, enourmous bell bottoms and a slight sheen of cocaine. Do you want them? I'd LOVE to have them go to someone who can give them a proper home, ie get drunk and watch them with their friends.

Gone to that big variety show in the sky, say hi to the cast of Real People, Tony. Sorry to anyone that wanted them

2) I'm gonna go to a damnportlander's meet up and get one of those fucking stickers with my name on it.
Brace yourselves.

(no subject)

With the recent rise in gas prices, the coming of warmer weather, and a desire to get off my ass more has prompted me to think about biking/MAXing to work a few days a week. I live in SE and work in Beaverton, and while this might be a cakewalk to some, i've only purchased my first bike recently. So, the idea was to bike to the MAX station, probably the one at Lloyd, and then MAX it to Beaverton, then bike the (short) rest of the way to the office. But i'm wondering - what's "traffic" like in the morning? Say 7-730am going to Beaverton, and 530-545 going to SE from Beaverton? Is the MAX really crowded? Say, no-room-for-a-bike crowded?

Coffee Shop w/ Printer?

To the Anti-Smoking Gestapo

I hope you're happy. I hope you're just thrilled with yourself because you banned smoking at Pioneer Courthouse Square. I hope you're happy because you have successfully exterminated most activity and life from the Square. Because of you, no one wants to hang out in Portland's Living Room anymore. The thought that really rubs my fur the wrong way is that you voted for it, and you've never set foot in the Square in your entire life!

I also would be willing to bet that you're the same type of person who drives a gas guzzling environment killing SUV. Come to think of it, I think I am going to pass around a petition banning cars from within a six-block radius of the Square. Cars emit carbon dioxide. SUV's and scoorters emit more carbon dioxide than everything else. Did you stop to think about my health? Did you stop to think that just because I use the sidewalks, bike lanes, and public transportation that I don't matter because you're slowly killing me with your exhaust emissions? Not to mention the rest of the planet? I didn't think so. For that reason, I think there should be a ban placed on all gas-powered automobiles.

I'm not a hippie tree hugger, but banning smoking in theSquare is one of the most dumbest things that could of been done.

I hope you get backed over by your own SUV,
Me.

Wednesday Farmers Market (Park Blocks) begins tomorrow!

Great news for those of us damnportlanders who work in the downtown Portland area....

....the weekly Wednesday Farmers Market begins its season tomorrow, running until Halloween day. The market's hours are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

I look forward to bring back to the office fresh Pearl Bakery baguettes with locally-made pesto and/or artisan cheese. Bringing back berries to the office is always a hit too.

OHSU Dental.

I apologize if this has been posted before.

Does anyone have a ball-park estimate as to how much dental work at OHSU costs without insurance? I currently need some x-rays, a cleaning and maybe a filling. I used to go there when I was little, but I totally can't remember. Thanks for your help!

microphone jack broken :(

The microphone jack in my laptop is somehow broken - it worked all day yesterday, but it won't work anymore.  My microphone itself works on other computers, so it's not the microphone.  I actually need the microphone function of my computer for school, so I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about this.  Is it something I can fix myself?  If I have to take it in, is it going to cost a lot of $$$?  This is the first broken part of my laptop post-warranty, so I'm not totally sure what to do.  I've heard people suggest Belmont computers?  Thanks in advance!

Things We Learned, Today....The DP Edition

So, it seems we all learned something, today, however coloured by our experience.

I learned that smokers have opinions that smell like.....well, cigarette smoke; while non-smokers have opinions that smell like a 50/50 mix of feces and fact.

Now, seeing as how I'm on my federally-designated smoking reservation (which amounts to in my bedroom, in my apartment, on my bed, under a sheet, with a flashlight), can we all just sit down and share a nice big cup of shut the hell up, so I can be left alone to smoke my cigarettes/pot/crack/meth in bloody peace? Thank you.

What did YOU learn, today?

Everything is vegan now!

So, I'm watching the Mariners game and typing an email at the same time, so I'm not paying attention to the screen. An ad comes on, and I hear the words "Vegan Plumbing" several times in a bank ad.

Hmmm, I think. Vegan Plumbing? I need to tell all my damnportlander buddies about this, as it will surely be a request one day here. "Where you can find a vegan plumber?"

I glance at the screen, and there's a plumbing truck with the logo on the side: Beacon Plumbing.

I'm reading too much DP. Gotta take a break.

Where can I find a vegan electrician, by the way?
