Ponderings and Such

What do you want to be when you grow up?
I ask because I am almost 33 years old, and still don't know.

Who out there has found their great calling, their life's work, their ultimate dream job?

A girl in need.....

Hey there...
I'm in the process of moving and I have absolutely no furniture at all. I've been looking on craigslist for a couple weeks, but NO ONE has responded. So if any one has any chairs or couches or anything, I would be happy to transport them and take them off your hands!
Thanks so much!

War on Cars?

Random thought of the day.

Every year there are over 40,000 deaths due to automobile accidents. About 16,000 of these will be due to drunk driving.

In the same year there will be around 17,000 deaths do to illegal drug use (notice that this is only 1,000 more then drunk driving).

As a side note, despite all the laws and hoopla to make it illegal there have been no known deaths from Marijuana use (not mixed with other drugs).

If America only goes to war for the protection of its citizens, then where is the war on cars?

Edit: I made this after reading about another bicycle death here in Portland. Then I read the news to hear yet another meth report. Comparing cars to drugs was a random thought. I know the statistics are screwy based on total drivers and total drug users.

All screwy numbers aside I think we could be doing more to make cars safer. We worry so much about things that can kill us like cigarettes, drugs, alcohol, and are always trying to make these things harder to acquire. I would like to see it become harder to get a license.

I have been extolling the virtues of the drink known as Tokyo Tea, which was first served to me (in a pitcher!) at the Doug Fir, which has since changed their policy and no longer offers any of the "tea" drinks. I bought one for her when I visited her back East, and the bartender put too much gin in it and it was nasty.

My question to you is:

Where does one find a good Tokyo Tea in this city?

Thanks in advance, o helpful people.

I need some help with my Halloween costume. What can you tell me about eyeliner? Hair dye? Have you ever dyed a beard? Does it work okay?

I've never used eyeliner and only dyed my hair once (also for Halloween). I want to dye my hair and beard black, ideally for no more than 2 or 3 days, but I don't want it washing out the first time I shower or coming off on my pillow. Last time I dyed my hair I used permanent dye (intentionally), but this time I don't want the color sticking around too long. I also want black eyeliner. My eyes have been constantly watering for no apparent reason for the past three years or so, so I need something that won't smear. A friend was kind enough to recommend MAC's "Carbon" eyeshadow and angled brush -- any thoughts on that?

Can any of the locals help me out with this sort of thing when I need to actually do it?

I've heard that at the House of Perfumes on Hawthorne, they can duplicate any scent for you. Does anyone know if it's true? Has anyone had that done? Was it worth it?

Hey Portlanders,

I don't know if anyone is interested, but the Old Navy at vancouver mall is hiring for their customer service team. Mainly looking for people who can work mornings (starting around 8 am) or evenings. It's part-time (usually 10-20 hrs per week), and I'm sure the pay isn't great, but they are willing to train and they usually don't have a problem hiring people even if they don't have previous job/retail experience.

And while retail at holiday sounds scary, it is usually a ton of fun. Most of the customers/employees are really not as bad as you would think, especially the last minute shoppers. Plus, we do some fun stuff around the holidays.

Bottom line: It is a pretty good way to make some cash.

If you're interested, comment or email me at leighton@simmons.edu and I can point you towards an application, etc.

a long shot is better than nothing...

so-oh. i lost my wallet last night in SE. I'm heading out to look for it as soon as I get off work, but in the meantime, I thought perhaps damn portlanders might be of assistance. The wallet in question is pink leopard print (I've had it since I was 15, ok) and larger than usual wallet size. It was lost somewhere between the Hawthorne Fred Meyers, Sunnyside Park (34th & Yamhill) and Yamhill itself (all the way down to 20th). If anyone knows anyting, or has seen it, please for the love of all that is good, email me! There's no cash in the wallet, only valuable info, but I'll give a generous reward to anyone who can help. Thanks in advance.

Hey all you DP home owners. My boyfriend and I are looking to move back to Portland in August when our lease is up. We want to buy a house, not rent, and want to know of any mortgage, loan companies, banks, that a lot of you have gone with. Unfortunately, we're poor college students and don't have anything saved up for a down payment, so someone that does a 100% financial loan would be a must. Also, what would be some good neighborhoods to get into that have houses available in the 150,000 dollar range. We want a cute, new, 2-3 bedroom house in a nice neighborhood that has fenced yards, seeing as how we want to be able to have our dog dogs outside on nice days without a leash. I figured I should start looking now to get pre-qualified before we actually move, so any info would be awesome. Thanks in advance.

Does anyone have any idea what one would need to prove independent status for student loans in the even that you are under 24 and one parent is deceased and the other parent's whereabouts are unknown?

Anyone went through this and was granted independent status?

Anyone else remarked that each time a major hurricane makes U.S. landfall, Oregon gets a "severe" (everything's relative) storm of some sort? I know that large storm systems can affect large areas indirectly, but I'm wondering if it can happen this far away, or if it's just coincidence.

searching for dj skills

hi there,

so, a couple of terms ago, portland parks and rec had a class on spinning, scratching, mixing and other things important to dj-ing. but it hasn't been repeated since, i don't think.

does anyone have an idea of where to go to learn some of these things? it doesn't have to be a very hardcore class. (i don't expect to make money...) i just want to actually DO the stuff.

<3 thanks in advance for any input.

Looking for a dog groomer

I'm kinda new in the area and looking for a groomer for my three shelties. Ideally I want someone who uses a Dremel to do their nails instead of clippers, but if they are just good at filing them smooth that would be ok too. The place we go to now only files them if I remind them *every* time, and even then they don't do that great a job. We have a leather sofa being delivered tomorrow... I know they're going to trash it (which is why we got a cheap one) but I'd like to slow them down a little!

I live way out in Hillsboro but am willing to drive for a really great groomer.

Thanks in advance!

Completely unrelated to my earlier post:
There will be action marking the death of the 2,000th soldier in Iraq. Protest at Terry Schrunk Plaza, 5:00.
Come if you want, or don't. Don't make this drama.

Alright Phasm, I'm not done!

Since I am the "Master of the DP Flame War," I just can't back down! I gots to uphold the reputation, ya know?

Hmm...seems to me that you quoted Barbershop and a blogger as evidence of your thought process. While others did partake in civil disobedience, it was Rosa Parks who was recognized as the catalyst for the Civil Rights Movement. Why? Who knows!? What I do know is that we learn about her, she is the face of everything that was wrong at that time and she stood up and did something a lot of people (I'm guessing you're in that group...personal attack added!) wouldn't have.

A tribute should be left for everyone else who did and continues to do so for the advancement of basic human / civil rights. But that's not up to me. What is up to me is what I post about and what I think affects everyone around. She was a stellar lady and I give props to her.

I'm so so so so sorry if that pisses you off. I'm also so so so so so sorry that I deleted your comments. What you got to say now, Dawg? HUH? HUH!?!?!? Or do you just want to keep flooding DP with our own posts? Feel free to comment in here...none will be deleted.

I made a post awhile back about being treated badly when in chronic pain and seeking solutions....and got a huge response. Thank you! But now, things have gone a step further for me, and I need advice.

Does anyone know where I might be able to get some specific legal advice concerning my rights as a patient? The doctor that I was previously seeing made me sign a contract in order to get narcotics for my pain, neglected to actually find out what was causing my pain (and landing me in the hospital as a result) and now has written a letter that is in my medical file giving the impression that I was not taking the narcotics that she prescribed for me (I'm assuming that she means that I was SELLING them), that I was seeking narcotics from other providers (not true, I have never asked for narcotics from any doctor, including her), skipping appointments (I did miss an appointment, because I had a severe kidney infection and ended up in the hospital), etc.

As I have told her and other doctors, I really could care less if I get narcotics for my pain or not. All I want is a solution that will get rid of the pain for good. Another doctor at the clinic prescribed a non-narcotic medication that works pretty much as well as the vicodin, so that's not really my issue. But I REALLY feel uncomfortable having something so untrue about me in my file. The only reason I chose to see a different doctor from her (which I think is the main issue here) is that I felt that she wasn't doing her job, and that she was in fact making matters worse instead of better by not trying to find out what was wrong with me. I want solutions, not just medication to cover things up. Silly me. :p

I understand it's her word against mine, and I may not stand a chance fighting this....but if anyone is knowledgable about this and could give me some advice, I would REALLY appreciate this.

Thank you!

Rosa Parks

In 1943, Parks was hired as secretary of the local chapter of the NAACP, and by the late 1940s, she was named secretary of the Alabama State Conference of NAACP branches. Through this position, she came in contact with a number of civil rights leaders, such as Ella Baker, A. Philip Randolph and Roy Wilkins. In 1954, she reorganized the NAACP Youth Council, for which she served as adult advisor. Under Parks, youth members challenged Jim Crow by checking books out of white libraries and sitting in the white section of buses. Parks also attended a 1955 summer workshop at the Highlander Folk School, where she learned nonviolent protest strategies.

On 1 December 1955, while riding the bus home from her job as a seamstress, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white passenger. "People always say that I didn't give up my seat because I was tired," Parks later wrote, "but that is not true. I was not tired physically, or no more tired than I usually was at the end of the day. I was not old, although some people have an image of me being old then. I was forty-two. No, the only tired I was, was tired of giving in."
