How About a Nice Game Of Thermonuclear War?

"According to the Washington Post, the Pentagon has a revised doctrine to be signed in the next few weeks which would give the president the authority for a preemptive nuclear strike."

In short:

Bush: What're you doing?
Engineer: Putting in the nuclear strike button
Bush: That big red thing?
Engineer: Yes. You signed the bill last week.
Bush: Pretty...

*poke*.

Yay for mutually assured destruction <3.

FREE STUFF

We just moved out of our house, and we have two things that you all might want!

ONE extremely comfortable ugly armchair. It's big and wide and fluffy and has obviously been ravaged by a cat (it was like that when we got it). If you cover it with a sheet or comforter it is like sitting in the squishy arms of pure softness.

and

ONE bright red Weber kettle barbecue, full size, packed with a half-full bag of nature's hardwood charcoal and two plastic bags of fruit wood smoking chips, plus some lighter fluid. Take this from an avid meat smoker: this is a very good barbecue, a little rickety, but if we weren't moving to an apartment I would ABSOLUTELY be keeping it.

These two items are FREE to the first person who goes and grabs them from the front of our now-vacant house at 4419 SE Boise Street. Please come and get 'em if you want, and comment if you ABSOLUTELY intend to do so and/or have already done so, so people don't go out of their way.

The (former) House of Ill Repute thanks you, citizens of Portland!

Asking for your support...

Hey gang...

I know a lot of you support the right of gays and lesbians to marry. I know you can all understand how important it is that our country enact legislation that creates a greater degree of equality among us all. As one of my dearest friends says, simple "tolerance" unacceptable, and demand equality. She is not the only one who wants this.

California is the first major state out West to really battle over this legislation, and since it is seen as a "modern" state on the edge of where America is heading, it's getting a lot of news time. With "The Governator" in office, the rights of thousands hang by a precarious, bloody thread as the world watches to see if people will do what is right for others or simply do what is right for themselves. The Gay and Lesbian community and the Fundamentalist Right-winger communities both are holding their collective breath as Arnold is contemplating his decision to veto Senate Bill 849. Word as of 09/10/05 is he is possibly set to veto. This is a big thing, folks.

I am asking that you follow the simple instructions below. It will only cost you a buck or so (if anything), and know that your support will be very much appreciated byt he Gay and Lesbian community.

I've walked through it myself and the directions are accurate. It only takes about a minute, max.
California Gov. Schwarzenegger's office is accepting calls from anywhere regarding their marriage equality bill. It passed both houses of their legislature, but needs the Governor's approval. It's all automated, so you don't have to talk to anyone. Most of us now have free long-distance through cell phones or landlines, so do it every chance you get. If enough support is shown, full marriage rights may become a reality for millions of Americans. It's in our hands.

Follow these directions:
1. Call the Governor: 1-916-445-2841 (This number is listed at www.governor.ca.gov)
2. Push: 2 (voice your opinion on legislation)
3. Push: 1 (gender-neutral marriage bill - Senate Bill 849)
4. And push: 1 to support marriage equality
5. Hang up, and give yourself a hug for getting up offa that thing, and fighting for human rights.

If you would like to forward this or repost it, it would be very kind of you to do so. :)

I appreciate your help on this. Maybe one day, making posts like this will not be necessary...so let's hope for the best.

Bush Takes Responsibility for Blunders

By LARA JAKES JORDAN
Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush said Tuesday that "I take responsibility" for failures in dealing with Hurricane Katrina and said the disaster raised broader questions about the government's ability to respond to natural disasters as well as terror attacks.

"Katrina exposed serious problems in our response capability at all levels of government," Bush said at joint White House news conference with the president of Iraq.

"To the extent the federal government didn't fully do its job right, I take responsibility," Bush said.

Dear DP

Please shut the fuck up about not giving a fuck about anything. Honestly, no one fucking cares if you give a fuck about fucking anything. This applies to fucking everything, fucking anytime and fucking anywhere.

Fucking thanks.

Hawthorne Theater?

So I was walking along Hawthorne yesterday, and saw a new sign for a Hawthorne Theater at 39th. It's going to be in the space where Conan's was. Anyone know what kind of movies, when it opens, whether it'll have beer?

What car insurance company do you recommend? I left State Farm because they pissed me off (long story) and am about to leave Progressive. I hear there are more reasonably priced insurance companies out there, and I'd love to hear what you guys have to recommend!!

(I've been paying Progressive 100.00 a month for a 1991 Mazda 626. I've had two accidents in the past 3 years, one of them was NOT my fault, the other one was a tiny fender bender that was my fault, or the insurance company decided it was, anyway. :p)

I'd appreciate your input!! :) Thanks!

Has anyone gone to any of the cosmetology schools in the area for any services? What were you expereinces, good or bad?

I have dyed dark brown hair now that I want to get stripped back to my natural dark blonde color. I'm afraid to do this at home, and I'm not paying some professional salon to do it b/c I'm cheap and have very little money anyway. Does anyone know how much stripping would cost at one of the cosmetology schools? (I would call them first, but I wanted personal opinions from here, first.)

I just encountered a fairly huge spider, with rather long legs (my guess is maybe 3 inches long) and a body about the size of..i dunno. a pearl? not exactly sure. anyway, it was brown and I let it out which I am thinking now was stupid. Anyone have any idea what it was? I was looking up spiders and the only thing I can think of that it could have been was an agressive house spider, which I am hoping it wasn't. :|

ahhh!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm bored!!

My boyfriend and I moved to Garden Home a month ago and we haven't met anyone our age to hang out with.

This area sucks! We're looking for a house near Alberta St.

Anyone awesome out there live in Garden Home?

Backtracking an Attack

Bright yellow fliers are posted in my neighborhood, alerting us that an elderly woman was attacked by a Hispanic man with a steak knife the last week of August. She lived on SE 80th and Salmon. He forced his way into her house.

Where do I go to get more details/verify that this account is accurate?

A question.

Romantic hotels in Portland?

What's your favorite, why?

I really liked the idea of that hotel that was book themed, but for reasons left unsaid I've no plans to go to the beach. Is there anything like that around town?

Thanks in advance.

This is not an off-leash dog park, so if you bring your dogs, please
bring them on a leash.

Do not feed the animals?

So, I've been busy tonight worrying about how much I'm spending on school. Yeah. It sucks. I don't recommend it. Worry about whether your socks match, or what kind of ice cream to buy, but don't worry about money, because it blows. The highlight of my educational stress, of course, is that it appears that in mid-January, I will be jobless. Or rather, I get to pay my university an exorbinate amount of money to go teach school. Not totally sure how I'm going to come up with all of that money. Let alone... eat... Sooooo.

I'm looking for a second job. The bad news is, I'm available Saturdays and Sundays only. The good news is, I clearly have no pride. Therefore, I'm pretty much just looking for a job. Trained monkey work is fine, too. That's about the only requirement. Of course, more money is better (I'd love to make at least enough to pay rent this spring) but yeah... Not entirely a requirement. Right now I teach kids to read for between $8 and $10 an hour, so clearly, I'm not picky. For what it's worth, I have a couple of degrees and speak a couple of languages, and all that jazz, in the unlikely event that someone has a "real" job available which for some reason or another would only require me to work on the weekends. ;)

Anybody hiring? Or need a dog sitter? House sitter? Baby sitter? Or even things not involving sitting? Hell, I'll even do your filing or clean your damn toilet. Whatever.

P.S. If you want to mock me for this post without looking insensitive, feel free. I likely deserve it, and comments are screened. If for some reason, you would prefer to mock me publicly, that's fine too, just let me know, and I will happily unscreen your comment.

Two posts in one? :o Ragdoll Bush & Shimotsuma Story

I'm sure some of you have seen that game with the woman who falls through an endless series of spheres and empty space, yes?

Well, if you haven't, no need to worry.

The George Bush version is here. Scroll down once it loads -- click on him to manipulate him, and have fun.

---------------

Shimotsuma Monogatari is playing in Portland! You have NO IDEA how gleeful I am at this news, especially as it has only been announced to being at a handful of theaters around the nation.
[Anyone know what this theater tends to charge? I don't think I've been there before. What's it like? How big is it?]

I..am horrid at stating what the movie is about, so here's my halfassed version--anyone who can do it better, feel free: It's a cute story about two friends, Ichigo and Momoko, who are completely different [Ichigo/Ichiko being Yanki (female thug or sommat) and Momoko being Lolita (Not with the sexual connotations some have...it's a subculture in Japan that values femininity, innocence, etc)] -- and yet, alike in some ways. It has a feel similar to Amélie and is suitably quirky. Japanese [not animation.] :D

So I moved here a few months ago and I'm wondering the following:

Where's a good place to find fellow indie-rock-minded musicians?

Maybe YOU'RE one, in which case you should reply to this. Otherwise, that is all, and thank you for your time.

Also if anyone knows where to find a cheap baby stroller within Trimet distance of NE, preferably one with pink bunnies on it, please let me know as I need it for my job ASAP! And just in case someone has seen it, I lost my copy of a concert flier somewhere downtown, has anyone picked it up? Please send your response to my Hotmail address as I recently became vegan.

I Think Napoleon Dynamite Sucks Giant Fuzzy Donkey Balls. Tell Me Why I'm Wrong?

I have a question for the group...

I finally caved and watched Napoleon Dynamite tonight on HBO.

All of my friends have seen it and they laugh and quote lines from the movie and do impressions of the characters and whatnot. They swear it's like totally funny and awesome.

From the beginning, I've been resistant to the idea of watching the film.

I thought it looked annoying when I saw it on Ebert & Roeper, and in all the other clips I saw of it. I actively avoided it when it was in the theatres.

Now, when one of my friends quotes a line from the film and everybody else laughs, I don't think the quoted line was funny -- not just in the "Aw geez, I haven't seen the film so it's all out of context but I can tell from that line that the film is really funny and I should see it!" sense. In the "I'm glad they're happy but that's not what I call funny. Please gods don't let me be trapped in a bus with that movie." (and I say this with love. and I realize this is just my opinion. but damn. daaaaamn, brother.)

So yeah, I watched it tonight and I totally, totally hated it.

I'm trying to figure out why people like this movie. Is it because city folk have never been around boring pathetic hicks who are totally unaware of their empty, deadend lives and thus they think the characters are funny because "real people could never be like that?"

Or is there something else that I'm missing? Why would anyone this this movie is anything but a great, steaming pile of film school grad jizz?

FEMA Chief steps down, more to follow

President Bush on Tuesday acknowledged "serious problems" in the government's response to emergencies, and accepted responsibility for the federal government's failures in responding to the disaster.

"Katrina exposed serious problems in our response capability at all levels of government and to the extent the federal government didn't fully do its job right, I take responsibility," Bush said during a news conference.

Say what you will about Bush, but it takes backbone to accept personal responsibility for the slow response to Katrina, especially considering there were hundreds of other officials to blame.
