Stumptown?

What is "Stumptown?" I've heard heard it and seen it used occasionally, but it's still a mystery to me. Is it a nickname for Portland or a section of Portland? What is the origin of the name?

Mormons in Portland

Despite damnportlanders being a fairly liberal community, I wanted to see if there are any other Mormons out there, lurking in the shadows of damnportlanders. I've got a community that's been running for over a year, but there are only about 10 members and it's frankly dead. I was trying to find other LDS people in Portland, though.

Anyone out there? Anyone? Beuler?

Edit: all flames will be screened and ignored.

(x-posted to beavertonpeople and damnportlanders)

It's clear from the responses I've received that there are either a) no other Mormons in damnportlanders or b) they do not wish to publicly declare themselves as such. I apologize if I have offended any with this post and I'll be shutting off comments to eliminate any further disagreement.

Thanks to all who helped.

Are there any dentists that you know of that offer repayment schedules?

As in - my girlfriend most likely will need a root canal. She doesn't have health insurance right now and she can't wait until she does. She is willing to pay a monthly bill, but can't afford thousands or hundreds of dollars up front.

Your help is appreciated.

Thanks!

Headline of the Week!

Naked swimmer reaches Ross Island

Rescue workers from the Portland Police Bureau, the Portland Fire Department, and the Multnomah County sheriffs's Office River Patrol, responded to the report of a naked man swimming in the Willamette River towards Ross Island Wednesday morning.

The call was dispatched about 10:30 a.m. According to reports, the man was an adequate swimmer, and he made it all the way to the Island.

Portland Police spokesman Sgt. Brian Schmuatz said it's unlikely the man would face charges. Under Oregon law, it's not illegal to be naked in public unless you have the intent to be sexually aroused. When someone calls 911, rescue personal must respond, said Schmautz.

If you are hot, you can be naked, he said.

I love that last line...but what about the not-so-hot people in Oregon? Are they not allowed to be naked? OMG DISCRIMINATION AGAINST TEH UGLEH!

Gozarians in Portland?

Despite damnportlanders being a fairly liberal community, I wanted to see if there are any other Gozarians out there, lurking in the shadows of damnportlanders. I've got a community that's been running since the Third Reconciliation of the Last of the Meketrek Supplicants, but there are only about 10 pan-dimmensional reincarnations of Zuul... and it's frankly dead. I was trying to find other Gozerians in Portland, though.

Anyone out there? Anyone? Beuler?

I just left a few comments to winter_in_asia's post here.

There was absolutely nothing offensive about the comments--in fact, he replied all of them without seeming offended--and yet he deleted every single one of them.

The oddest thing is, he ignored every other smart-ass comment that was given to him prior to mine. Mine was actually the most civil and polite comment he received!

What the crap? Has anyone else noticed how odd this guy is? He's totally done stuff like this before, too.

I guess he became uncomfortable when I mentioned a movie that I kind of like about a gay guy in a Mormon ministry.
Guys who have issues with their sexuality are often uncomfortable talking about homosexuality, so I guess it's somewhat understandable. Eh, maybe it's just a Mormon thing.

But still; that's so freakin' random because he didn't mention that he might delete the comment, and judging from his replies, it was in no way apparent that he would.

What am I missing??

Shake your belly!

This started out as a short FYI to promote my bellydance classes and I know it sounds like an infomercial, but it's all true and from my heart. Anyone who is interested in taking bellydance from a truly talented dancer, please read it. Forgive the corny shit.

Bellydance with Yemaya at August Moon Community Cultivation Center(Vancouver, 39th St. exit)! Beginner and Intermediate classes starting September 12th. I have danced with Yemaya for two years now, and I absolutely love it. I don't care what your body size is, what you look like, this will give you so much confidence. When I moved here I was almost 200 pounds and bellydance was the farthest thing from my mind. Yemaya convinced me to start taking private lessons with her, and when she inititated group lessons, I was so excited to be with other dancers. We are all skill levels, from all walks of life. There is no "typical bellydancer, " I promise. What started out as a hope to get some excersize turned into a true love for this dance. I'm fascinated by all things belly! And if you are too, or maybe just a little curious, please contact me with your full name, email & phone number. I live in Portland and have found no problems getting to this center. It's literally right off the freeway and there is plenty of public transportation access. Classes start September 12th!

Beginners: 8 week class is $75 - Mondays 6:30-7:45 PM.
Intermediate class is ongoing at $40 a month - Mondays 8:00-9:15 PM.

Yemaya also offers private lessons at $50/hour or $180 for 4 classes purchased at once.

One of those people

I never watched movie credits until I started seeing my current girlfriend. She’s out of town right now and I went to Broken Flowers last night with some friends and found out that they too watch the credits all the way through.

I feel as though I'm part of a new club.

Who here also belongs to the "I don’t leave until the credits are over" club?

Maybe we’ll run into each other at the next movie.

Dinner in SW/Tigard

As I've mentioned in previous posts, my parents are coming to town on Thursday. They'll be staying at a hotel near where I live in SW, near Tigard (i.e., near where Barbur Blvd becomes Pacific Hwy) and it may be convenient to go to dinner in that area once or twice while they're here. There are a lot of restaurants along 99W in SW Portland/Tigard, but I've only ever been to one, Buster's Texas BBQ.

Does anyone have any comments on any of the other restaurants around there?

I am in a bit of a dilemma and was hoping someone could help us out.

We bought some baby formula (5 cans - Enfamil Lipil) and our pediatrician up and changed the formula our baby is on. Since we can't find the receipt, we can't return the them. We were wondering if anyone would be interested in buying these from us? If I can't unload these it's Top Ramen until Friday. Normally I would just give these away but we are really struggling right now.

I would like to get full price for them but since when would you buy something from someone when you could just go to your store and get it? I would take $10/can...they sell for $14 in the store.

Oh yeah, and did I say babies are expensive? Criminy. Good thing the boy is so damn cute.

I TUNES QUESTION...

Ok so we opened our I Tunes to add music today and saw a shared music folder with other peoples playlist in it... it's never been there before and these people have some awesome songs! My question is, is there a way to take what is on their playlists and move it into your library? We can't seem to figure out what to do with it, and I don't want to plug in my Ipod because then it will rewrite everything to that person's playlist...

Thanks in advance for any help!

New annoying shopping cart trend...tandem carts?

Okay, was it not enough to allow giant plastic SUV shopping carts? Is this a case of giving an inch and then finding that the whole mile has been assumed to be there for the taking?

Attention all middle class "mother" types who like to take the children on an outing to the grocery store. I have a few polite suggestions that will make everyone's shopping experience more pleasant.

  1. If you can shop anytime before 3pm during the week, please for the love of whatever diety or lack thereof, do it.
  2. If you can't shop before 3pm during the week, please for the love of whatever diety or lack thereof, leave the kids at daycare until you finish your grocery shopping.
  3. If you must, absolutely must bring the kids with you:

    • see #1
    • try to keep them from hampering the other shoppers
    • If you must use the giant SUV cart, lock make sure the kid(s) isn't(aren't) attempting the shopping cart version of a death spiral or imitating a banshee
    • YOU SHOULD PUSH THE CART
    • YOU SHOULD NEVER EVER LET YOUR CHILDREN HAVE THEIR OWN SEPARATE SHOPPING CART TO DRAG AROUND BEHIND YOU.
    • YES YOU ARE BLOCKING 3/4 OF THE MAIN THOROUGHFARE OF THE GROCERY STORE. PLEASE MOVE ASIDE AND DON"T TELL YOUR CHILDREN TO STAY PUT WITH THEIR SHOPPING CART IN THE MIDDLE OF THE AISLE.

I swear to my lack thereof, there were two women, each with three children, at the very small New Seasons at 7 Corners, at 5pm. Both women were letting their children push separate shopping carts and when they converged at the deli counter...well train wreck does not even begin to describe the scene.

If you drive in this fair town, please please PLEASE stop before the stop sign. During my run today, I got hit crossing the intersection of Ladd and Palm because some guy breezed past the stop sign. Luckily I saw him coming and managed to akwardly jump out of the way, so he only caught my hand. On the way back from my run, it nearly happened again. I slowed down just before crossing 12th and Madison but if I hadn't, the second guy would have hit me too.

Is it too much to ask to stop before the stop sign, and then creep forward to see if you can pull out? Sheesh.

In other news, almost getting mowed down by a car gives you a great adrenaline rush for a run. So you know, thanks for that.

So, can anyone give me a good list of gourmet or organic groceries in the SE/NE area? I'm going to be living around SE Holgate and 37th, I'm quite the biker, so I don't mind some distance (I'm looking for work, too...) but no further out than 80th and not too far north.

Anywhere I can find this info, also?

Thanks!

Hey everyone. I was refered here. I live in Portland and I am having some finanical trouble. My husband recently started a job and the check that we got today was way shorter than expected. We are about $300 short of being able to pay our bills. We won't get a check until next month so I have decided to try and sell some of my photographs to pay the bills. If any of you are interested or know anyone who might be interested in my work, please pass the word along. We really need the money. You can see my listing here:
