Underage clubs/Places to go dance

My friend and I are from Eugene, and we both love Portland and are planning a trip up this Saturday and we want to go clubbing, we're both 17 :

Does Portland have underage clubs? If so, can anyone tell me about ones theyve been to or ones to avoid?

Is there any other places where you can chill with people and go dancing?
There is no place in Eugene, what we had got closed. And besides that its more fun to go up to Portland anyway.

Thanks for the input, anything in the way of where to look, directions or just anything relevant is welcome
Thanks again,

mattress shopping

hey you damn portlanders

my faithful Aerobed finally died and I want to get a mattress. Where's a good store to buy one at? I've heard that mattress salespeople are as skeezy as used car salespeople, and I want to avoid that as much as possible. I live out in Hillsboro, and I think there are a couple at Tanasbourne. any recs?

also, is it possible to make payments on a mattress for a couple of months? I want a king-size bed but can't afford to buy it all at once, and want to spread out the cost over 3-4 months. thanks

oh yeah - I want prints of some famous paintings for my apartment (Klimt's The Kiss, Van Gogh's Starry Night, various Monet and Degas paintings) along with some nice local photos that don't cost an arm and a leg. Where should I look for those?

i'm having trouble with mozilla thunderbird...it won't get new mail for me.
yes, internet is up and running (obviously, or i wouldn't be able to post this)
this has been happening for a couple of weeks, but usually when i shut it down and
restart the program everything's fine (sort of).
now when it says 'host contacted, sending login information'
nothing more happens; it's just locked up in that mode

if i download the latest version in order to see if this will
somehow miraculously fix the problem
will i lose all my old emails?
i don't want to lose them

or, perhaps someone has an easy fix for me?

thank you i love you

I have an animal question for you guys. What kind of critters have you seen or encountered in Forest Park or any of the other parks or forests around Portland? I'm curious about the wildlife up there. Thanks!

Question: How many Oregonians does it take to change a lightbulb?

Answer: 14

1 to file plans with the City
1 consultant to recommend ways to change the bulb and different types of replacement bulbs being used by comparable cities
1 to actually change the bulb
1 to offer executive coaching services to the changer
1 to design the logo and collateral package for the lightbulb changing process
1 to propose a levy to fund future lightbulb changes
1 to question whether or not the City should even be in the business of changing bulbs
1 to suggest approaching Nike, intel and/or Fred Meyer about structuring a public/private partnership to ease the budget problem of future light bulb changes
1 to recycle parts of the old bulb
1 to develop and environmental impact statement for the disposal of the remainder of the old bulb
1 to organize a protest against the disenfranchisement of the old bulb
1 to write the editorial in the Skanner pointing out that there never was any serious consideration of replacing the bulb with a non-white light
1 to point out that the whole thing could have been changed more cheaply in Washington County

Local News

So, I don't have a TV, I don't subscribe to the Oregonian, and I'm not impressed by the local news station websites. Yet I still want to keep up-to-date on the news. I can get the national and international news through RSS feeds, and I do, but I'm really more interested in what's happening locally. Is there an RSS feed or a good website for local news? I'm looking for something more in depth than the local news stations, too. Like something that shows all the police blotter type stuff (accidents, fires, municipal stuff, etc.). Does anything out there like that exist? For example, earlier this week I spotted some heavy fire & rescue activity, but couldn't find anything out about what happened. Do I just need to invest in a police radio scanner?

How do you get your news, damnportlanders?

My dad and his wife are here visiting.  It is their second trip to Portland.  I have NO IDEA what to do with them today?  I am stumped.  They have seen the gorge, the falls, the beach, the airport museum Mt Hood, Mt St Helens, Seattle and Mt Rainier.  There was not a lot of excitement about going to any of the gardens.  I could take them downtown for the afternoon, I suppose?  Not sure if that interests them or not?

Does anyone have any suggestions?  One thing to keep in mind, my father is really big on photography, he really likes to go to scenic places to get photos.  Also they live in a relatively small city so city things are cool to them as well.

Yoga Classes?

Looking for a good beginning-ish yoga class in either the Portland or Beaverton/Aloha area, near Max or bus lines a plus. The more affordable, the better, obviously!

I did yoga in college, but it's been a few years and I'd like to find a laid-back class where neophytes will be welcomed but also have room to grow. I'd prefer Iyengar or really anything where the emphasis is on perfecting the asanas, rather than chanting or building up a sweat.

Thanks in advance!

Gay Portland LJ community

With the new directory up, I'm starting a gay Portland LJ community. It's simply gayportland and is really for all, gay, straight, bi, lesbian, transgendered, questioning... whoever really.

Similar rules to DP here, btw. It's all ages, and there is a non-nudity rule in place for the posts. :)

Wherre to get Crack

I sat down at the bench across from my work to eat my lunch and read the new Mercury. Two gentlemen sat down next to me and made cursory inquiries after my health, well-being etc. I smiled and nodded noncommittally. Then they commenced selling crack to random passersby.

So if you need some crack, the bench at the corner of SW 5th and Alder is evidently the place to be.

Last Thursday Stand Tonight!

Just thought I'd post that I will be having a booth tonight for Last Thursday on the corner of 30th and Alberta selling Kombucha tea (using organic ingredients) for $1 a glass and the cultures to brew your own for $15 a piece. I am hoping to do Tarot readings as well for $5 a reading but likely will be running the stand alone so don't know if that will happen for sure yet. I will be setting up about 5p and staying till about 8p or things run out whichever comes first. I have another commitment at 8p to meet the people in a place I may be moving to. If you are in the area, come by and say "Hi"!

Does anyone know a good place to rent kayaks, and how much they cost?
also how long are kayaks usually? I'm wondering if it would fit in my volvo station wagon (which has baout 8' behind the front seats) as I don't have a rack ...
EDIT: My niece (who was staying with me) and I were talking about renting kayaks over the weekend when my sister/her mom gets here. She (several times), I and my partner (once) have been kayaking before, but my sister and her partner haven't. Would we have to get any introductory packages to be allowed to rent?

Barbecue tips

I've been asked to give a lecture/lesson on barbecuing. I've got myself set up with a number of ideas (recipes, cuts of meat, sauces, etc.), but I wanted to hear from some of you. What suggestions do you have for barbecuing or grilling? Do you marinade or baste? Any good recipes? I'd love some ideas.

Protocol Question

I need help and I know this has not a thing to do with Portland but I really need some advice fast and you guys always give great advice. This is a protocol question for a job offer situation.

Basically, I have been applying to a large university for a web developer position. If anyone knows anything about major universities, they move at the speed of a beaurocracy. Anyway, I applied for one job and interviewed with them. Then I didn't hear anything back (I'm talking for over a month). Then I applied for another department, interviewed with them and didn't hear anything back right away. Then just as I was expecting to hear something from the 2nd job, the 1st job said they wanted me to do the background check prior to an offer being made.. so I turned in all the appropriate paperwork for this. I found out yesterday that the background check came back but there was a minor discrepancy. I emailed him back last night the explanation of the reason for it (believe me.. it was just a difference in dates with a legitimate reason for them). I haven't heard anything back from him now for the offer at all. Then a few minutes ago, I received a phone call from the 2nd department offering me the position. They want me to start right away (as in today if I wanted). I let him know that I might have another offer pending and asked for 24 hours to accept it. They agreed.

Now here's my problem. I don't know what the protocol is. Should I email the first and tell them that I have accepted another offer and accept the 2nd position? Am I obligated to wait for and accept the 1st position since I applied there first? I think I want the second position more (they are both programming positions.. but I think the 2nd one offers more in the way of variety and learning). I really like the environment in the 2nd office as well. Basically I just feel bad for going through all the motions for the 1st job only to have it stolen away from them at the last minute before it seems like they are ready to make an offer.

Oh and I know the money for the 2nd position and it's within range of what I was asking for. I don't know the money offer on the 1st position although I believe it's going to be roughly the same... so I don't think money is a big factor... and even if it was, the amount offered in the first is enough that I'm happy with it.

Bead stores

Since everyone here was so great about suggesting hair salons, I have another question to ask of you.

Who knows of a good bead store besides Dava Bead and Trade? Not that I have anything against it; I just want to go somewhere else for a change. There must be some other bead/jewelry artists around here who can answer my question. Thanks!

Tune in bitches!

No DJ's. Just a wise-cracking voice spewing his wit every now and then. And fewer commercials...I swear! No weather reports, no traffic updates, no news. Just music. It's the bomb-diggity.

They play all sorts of music. 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's and Double Zero's.

Oh yea.

Or as The Simpsons SO perfectly stated :

Boss: This is the DJ 3000. It plays CDs automatically, and it has
three distinct varieties of inane chatter.

[presses a button]

DJ 3000: Hey, hey. How about that weather out there? Woah! That was the caller from hell. Well, hot dog! We have a weiner.

Bill: Man, that thing's great!

Marty: Don't praise the machine!

Err...well, I AM praising the machine. The point is...tune in.

Oregon hippies, the London Bombing is YOUR FAULT..

A month before the London bombings, British authorities balked at giving the U.S. permission to apprehend a man now believed to have ties to the bombers, according to sources familiar with the inquiry. U.S. authorities wanted to question Haroon Rashid Aswat about a plot to set up a "jihad training camp" in Oregon.

If you hippies weren't so accepting of terrorists, London would be safe now.

Oh ya.... (/flame mode) and all.

summer blues

I got off work early today, but everyone else still has something to do today so I'm stuck alone. its hot, and I just don't know what to do with myself. I recently graduated college where we did things for fun in between large amounts of work, and only if we could procrastinate a little. the concept of "go, play, right now!" is a bit of a novel concept, and I don't really know what to do.

I can't eat any more ice cream (I just can't. really. please, no more.)

I don't get paid until tomorrow.

its hot (duh)

I already chased the cat around a few times (she's now under the deck)

so dear Portlanders, what do you do for fun? (or an afternoon off)craft projects? art? movies? book recommendations?!?!

Ethnic restaurants in Hillsboro

So where does one get good ethnic, vegetarian-friendly food in the Hillsboro area? (Meaning Hillsboro, Aloha, Beaverton, Forest Grove.)

I'm not looking for: Indian, Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Mexican, or Italian, because I've had my fill of those.

I *am* looking for: Malaysian, Korean, vegetarian-friendly Vietnamese, Lebanese, Iranian, Ethiopian/Eritrean, Greek, Afghani or anything else not named so far that is veggie-friendly.

Although I'll take something from the first category if it's a place that's really good and different from the norm.

Help me, I'm dying out here!

Also, a general question, not Hillsboro-related: is European or South/Central American food *ever* veggie-friendly? Where should I be looking?

"MAN"icure place...

...well my husband has mentioned a place (the name escapes him) that will shave your face and give ya a haircut all while letting you drink beer and play X-box (how manly)... His birthday is in a little over a week and I would like to take him there.

So, if anyone knows where this place is and it's name or something similar I would be forever thankful!

So, they are filming something outside my apartment (over by 49th and Hawthorne). Anybody know what this may be? Stupid bright lights and people yelling "cut".

You know, if I weren't so lazy I'd go down and ask a security person... but I am that lazy, and closer to my computer... so I'm asking you all.
