Soon: a new and improved Burnside

For those of you who may not know, the skatepark known as "Burnside" is 11 years old this month. Located under the east end of the Burnside bridge, the skatepark is widely regarded as the event that triggered the latest boom in skateboarding: the era of the free municipal skatepark.

Today Oregon has more skateparks than any other state in the US: 80+, and they are the best in the world, as noted by Thrasher and Transworld Skateboarding magazines.

Much of the team responsible have continued building parks, and a partial resume of their work is shown on their web site:

But Burnside is getting old. We've pitched in our own money to relayer some of its older sections, including the hump, the big hip, the cinderblock wall, and the rough flat areas at the bottom of the cinderblock wall. Saturday we jackhammered out all that stuff, and shaping of the new Burnside was today and tomorrow (hump is larger, hip will be smoother, etc). The concrete pours Tuesday.

I invite all to come by and snap some photos, video, or just watch this historic event. Its certainly ghetto, but its as OG as Portland gets. Contributions welcomed, but certainly not expected.

Afterall, its our park.
